“There’s a climate catastrophe. Much irreversible (in the next few hundred years) damage to the ecosystem is already locked in. All the choices that we make are, alas, about ‘least bad’ options. And we need to make them as evidence-based as we can.

I don’t think that Greens should be approaching the issue of energy generation with any fixed preconceptions other than avoiding the maximum amount of harm to humanity and to the ecosystems that support us. Let’s have an evidence-based discussion about all the options, then choose our preferences.

Greens in the UK are not going to sweep to sole power this decade. We will have limited political capital and we will need to choose our priorities wisely. We ought to prioritise decarbonisation, and this means learning from the disastrous German experience when we list our demands.”
